Our local MP Grant Shapps has been appointed the first Secretary of State for Energy Security & Net Zero, in what is being termed a "mini-reshuffle" of Rishi Sunak's government.
The new department comes as a result of the Prime Minister's decision to rearrange a number of existing government departments. The department's role will be to secure the UK's long-term energy supply, bring down bills and halve inflation. The move recognises the significant impact rising prices have had on households across the country as a result of Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine, and the need to secure more energy from domestic nuclear and renewable sources as we seize the opportunities of net zero.
In a tweet, Grant said of his new role:
"I am delighted to become the first Secretary of State for the new Department for Energy Security & Net Zero. My focus will be securing our long-term energy supply, bringing down bills and thereby helping to halve inflation."
The Department for Energy Security & Net Zero is one of four new government departments.
