Welwyn Hatfield residents will be shocked to hear that the local Labour Party have refused to demand that Councillor Colin Croft stands down – despite his 404 mile return journey simply to attend to his Council business .
Local resident and MP Grant Shapps said, “The strength of feeling in the streets, shops, homes and pubs of Welwyn Hatfield is clear. The Welwyn Hatfield Times even carried out a survey which showed that 9 out of 10 residents reckon the commuting Labour Councillor Colin Croft should do the honourable thing and resign.
“Everyone assumed that is precisely what would happen in order that his by-election would tie in with the local elections this May. It’s therefore shocking to discover that the local Labour Party is so out-of-touch with hardworking Welwyn Hatfield residents that their leadership failed to demand his resignation. Instead this Labour Councillor continues to draw nearly£5,000 of local taxpayer cash whilst sticking two fingers up to our residents.
“How this Councillor thinks he can continue to represent Welwyn Hatfield residents with a 400 mile plus journey is a mystery. The fact that the local Labour leadership is too weak to do anything about it says a lot about their attitude to hardworking taxpayers who remember how their Council tax doubled during the Labour years.”
Conservatives will be launching a petition to try to ensure that local people get a say over whether they want Labour Cllr Croft to continue to represent them from Yorkshire.
