The Community Chest is a local funding scheme obtainable to communities and local groups located in Welwyn Hatfield. The plan was to award funding for many small but important local things which would otherwise not gain funding. The scheme is not only about money, it enables Councillors and residents to work together to negotiate and plan where these funds will go.
The new Ward Improvement Scheme i.e. the Community Chest has recently been re-launched by Conservatives, enabling local communities in our Borough to bid for funding of up to a staggering sum of £2000. With this amount of money, local projects or ward improvements can succeed with a little help from the Council.
For example, the scheme have decided to help blind and partially sighted people in the Panshanger area of Welwyn Garden City to cook with more confidence. With the help from the Community Chest scheme, £250 has been assigned for the project to aid in purchase special cooking equipment. Councillor Johnston, together with Councillors Darren Bennett and Roger Trigg, are helping to provide a range of equipment for the project. Just one example of many of how the Community Chest has helped.
There also been a lot of promotion in participation in sport, various physical activities and a great increase in participation in local heritage or culture. Overall, with the help of the Community Chest Scheme there has an increase in local activities with the backing of the funds. With the support of The Community Chest Scheme, the community has been able to come together and make a secure link within the public with a wide range of local activities.
